I decided to redo one of my portfolios and call it, “Salt of the Earth,” to reflect the type of people I meet up here in the Pacific Northwest. I’m only going to include images taken here in the Portland/Vancouver area. My latest shot is of Bill and Peggy Zimmerman who own Bi-Zi Farms in Vancouver. It’s a great place to pick up fresh produce and home-made jams and jellies and more. Here’s a link to their site – Bi-Zi Farms.

Dave owns Max Wood, a saw mill, located east of Vancouver, WA, where he creates custom rough sawn lumber for homes and buildings here in the area.

I just finished a slide show about Phil Arnold, a 94 year old map maker, who lives in Vancouver, WA. Mr. Arnold started making maps over 60 years ago and continues his work today even at the age of 94. You can view the slide show here.

As I was driving along a country road I spotted this old gentleman walking his dog. I pulled the car over and asked him if I could photograph him. He seemed a bit delighted and allowed me to snap off a couple of frames. We talked a little about the weather and our love of dogs. I thanked him for being so willing and drove off knowing I had stumbled across another interesting person and image.

Fallow Deer

Fallow Deer fawn

This is an image I made this evening of Darrell and a Fallow Deer fawn that was born today. Darrell raises Fallow Deer on his 5 acre farm in Washington a few miles from where we live. It took us 30 minutes to find the fawn because after she’s born her instinct is to find a place in the grass and hide.

Walla Walla Washington – editorial photo assignment

We spent a couple of days in Walla Walla, Washington this week shooting at the Baker Boyer Bank for an editorial assignment. What a great bank and charming town. Baker Boyer has been around for 139 years, since 1869 and is Washington’s oldest bank. Unfortuantely we didn’t get to any of the local wineries, but we will make it back there this summer and do some taste testing.

Keybank Annual Report

Recently we worked on the Keybank Annual Report and part of the photography took place at JA Biztown in Portland. JA Biztown is a hands-on-learning simulation that exposes students to the way business and the American free enterprise system work. This little guy was a bank teller and took his role very seriously. It’s basically a small town with a variety of businesses that the kids get to work in and shop at. Focus on Youth

For a few months I’ve been working with Focus on Youth, an organization of volunteers that helps at-risk youth by teaching them photography skills.
