An environmental portait I took for one of my friends for her graduation from college. The right person, in the right light at the right place = a nice image. It can take a lot of work to find the right location for a portrait, but the payoff is always worth it. I find the background to be as important as the subject in most of my images. I guess it’s a bit like telling a story, there has to be context for environmental portraiture.

This is an executive portrait I took for The Regence Group in Portland, OR. I used one 500 watt tungsten light with a small octabox attached to it. I shoot these using my Canon 85mm f1.2 lens and I love the abstractness of the background created by the shallow depth of field.

CFO (Chief Financial Officer) magazine hired me to create a portrait of CFO Doug Klein from Goodman’s Interior Structures in Phoenix last month. It was a scramble to find a location and get the shoot organized in a few hours, but we did it. Doug Klein was very gracious with his time and made the job a lot easier for us.

I decided to redo one of my portfolios and call it, “Salt of the Earth,”  to reflect the type of people I meet up here in the Pacific Northwest. I’m only going to include portraits taken here in the Portland/Vancouver area. My latest shot is of Bill and Peggy Zimmerman who own Bi-Zi Farms in Vancouver. This is a location portrait of my good friend Robert and the first car he bought, a 1966 GTO. It still has the original paint job and looks great.

This is an environmental portrait of who Dave owns Max Wood, a saw mill, located east of Vancouver, WA, where he creates custom rough sawn lumber for home builder and landscaping.
